Vol. 257 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Road Improvement Grants.

143.

asked the Minister for Local Government why County Meath and County Dublin are the only counties in Ireland which do not get grants from his Department for improvement works on county roads; and if he will remedy this situation.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 36 on 11th February, 1971.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that there are as many county roads in Meath or Dublin as in any other county and that it is unfair that these two counties should be singled out for deprivation of grants from central funds towards the improvement of county roads?

The policy is to phase out these grants in areas where the county roads programme is nearing completion or has been completed. I am not aware that the position is as the Deputy has stated.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary state whether Counties Meath and Dublin are the only counties that are phased out of this programme? By various devices other counties are able to continue obtaining benefits under the scheme. The treatment given to Meath and Dublin is most unfair and it is preventing the carrying out of many improvements which are vital.

I will have the position examined.

I hope so.
