Vol. 258 No. 9

Written Answers. - Shannon Turnabout Policy.

324.

Mr. O'Donnell

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will give a breakdown of (a) the figure of £6 million which he has estimated as the cost of a Shannon turnabout of Aer Lingus transatlantic services; and (b) the figure of £2½ million as the estimated annual cost of maintaining a turnabout policy at Shannon.

The capital figure of £6 million is made up as follows:—

Two additional aircraft required for Dublin/ Shannon feeder service

£4.6m

Construction of a hanger at Shannon

£1.0m

Engineering/maintenance, handling and catering equipment for Shannon

£0.6m

£6.2m

say

£6.0m

The additional continuing annual cost of a Shannon turnround in Aerlínte is made up as follows:—

Reduction in Aerlínte transatlantic traffic

£1.908m

Feeder services direct and indirect costs

£0.369m

Additional costs for engineering maintenance, handling and catering

£0.654m

Servicing of £6 million capital expenditure referred to above

£0.5m

Total

£3.431m

Less:

Savings on transatlantic flect

£0.739m

£2.692m

say

£2.7m

In a public statement which he issued on 20th January, 1972, the general manager of Aer Lingus said that the figures in question are easy to establish for anybody who wishes, with an open mind, to sit down with the company officials. I suggest to the Deputy that this would be the preferable course for him as he can then raise and get comprehensive answers on matters of detail on which I could not adequately inform him.
