Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Irish Citizenship.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is intended to offer citizenship of the Republic to those British citizens who renounced their British nationality.

Some of the persons concerned may be Irish citizens already and some others may be entitled to acquire citizenship by registration or by lodging a declaration of acceptance of citizenship. The remainder could acquire citizenship only by naturalisation.

In order to qualify for the grant of a certificate of naturalisation, a person must comply with certain conditions that are prescribed in the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1956.

I have power to grant a certificate even though some or all of those conditions are not compiled with, but only in certain circumstances that are prescribed in the Act.

My Department are available to advise and assist any inquirer in regard to the requirements of the law and the procedure to be followed by him or her in order to acquire Irish citizenship.
