Vol. 259 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Estate.

12.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission will inspect the Hughes estate, Dalgan, Dunmore, County Galway with a view to acquisition and division.

Inquiries were made some years ago regarding this 141 acre property and the Land Commission decided not to proceed further in the matter at the time. They are now having up-to-date inquiries made.

Could I ask the Minister if he would instruct the Land Commission to investigate this matter because in the area where this estate is situated there are many uneconomic holders and the present trend is that they want to increase their holdings in order to increase agriculture? If this Hughes estate which I ask the Minister to instruct the Land Commission to acquire and divide amongst the people, is not divided it is possible that some of the people already employed in agriculture in that area will have to leave in order to make room for others to stay.

I think the Land Commission are aware of the situation. Perhaps if the Deputy inquiries again in three weeks' time there will be more up-to-date information available.

The local people do not want an outsider coming in.
