Vol. 259 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Remand Centre.

12.

asked the Minister for Education the total number of young persons as of the latest available date at the Remand and Assessment Unit in the Preventive Centre, Finglas, County Dublin.

There were four boys on remand in the Remand and Assessment Unit at St. Laurence's, Finglas, on 22nd February, 1972. Since the date of the opening of the unit on 14th January to 22nd February the number has varied at different times from 11 to four.

I may add, for information, that St. Laurence's has also now been certified as a school for the reception of boys between the ages of ten and 16 years sent there in pursuance of Part IV of the Children Act, 1908. Justices of the courts are being informed accordingly.

13.

asked the Minister for Education if he will list the names, addresses and qualifications of the board of management of the new remand institution at Finglas, County Dublin.

The committee of management of St. Laurence's Centre, Finglas is still in the process of being constituted. Accordingly, I am not yet in a position to supply the information sought by the Deputy.

Will the Minister state when it will be opened?

It has been opened.

When will we be able to move some of those in Marlborough House?

I went into this in detail on a previous occasion.

The Minister will admit this has been going on since last year.

The Minister is as concerned as anybody about this.

Would he not agree that there has been an intolerably long delay?
