Vol. 259 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postage Stamps Issue.

156.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will give details of the postage stamps proposed to be issued in 1972.

As already announced, seven special stamps will be issued in 1972 on the following themes:

Date of Issue

World Health Day 1972

7/4/72

Conference of European Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (Europa Stamp)

1/5/72

The Patriot Dead, 1922-23

1/6/72

Contemporary Irish Art

10/7/72

Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the Olympic Council in Ireland

28/8/72

Christmas

16/10/72

Fiftieth Anniversary of the issue of the first Irish Postage Stamp

6/12/72

I take it the Minister has no intention of issuing stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the State, or to commemorate the deaths of Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith, the founders of the State, or the 50th anniversary of the enactment of our first Constitution? While the Minister agrees to issue a stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the issue of the first postage stamp, he does not consider it necessary to issue a stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the State. Does the Minister consider the postage stamp more important than the foundation of the State?

I think the Deputy is trying to confuse me with his very intricate supplementary question. I read out to the Deputy the list of stamps which will be produced for 1972.

One of them is for the 50th anniversary of the issue of the first postage stamp.

That is so.

The Minister would not have one issued for the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the State?

The stamp programme has been decided on. With regard to the question of whether or not a stamp should be issued for Collins and Griffith the Deputy should be aware at this stage, because it has been said often enough, that a special stamp of a symbolic design to commemorate all those who died in the civil war period will be produced?

The Minister considers the first postage stamp much more important than the establishment of the State.
