Vol. 259 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retraining Courses.

20.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons at present engaged on courses of retraining in the age groups 20-30, 30-45 and 45 and over.

The total number of persons at present engaged on retraining courses in AnCO training centres is 270. The numbers in each age group referred to in the Deputy's question are: 20 to 30 years—137; 30 to 45 years—33; over 45 years—5.

Does the Minister consider that the figures relating to persons over 45 years are satisfactory?

No, but these figures do not include apprentices, of course.

Will the Minister not agree that the figures are not surprising considering the fact that Government Departments will not employ permanently any person who is more than 40 years?

That has no bearing on the matter.

They should give them pensions at 45.

21.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of applications for training received in 1970, 1971 and 1972 to date.

AnCO received 1,450 applications for entry into training centers in 1970; 1,300 applications in 1971 and 370 applications in 1972 to date.
