There are 69 meat export premises licensed under the relevant Acts. With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report a list of these premises, and the date on which each was first licensed.
It is not the practice to give information in regard to the killing capacity or scale of operation of individual plants.
On the basis of recent killings there is a considerable over-capacity in the beef sector of the meat industry but as the Deputy is aware these killings are abnormally low in comparison with the corresponding periods in the past few years. In the circumstances and having regard to the seasonal fluctuations in slaughterings, the extent of over-capacity cannot be realistically assessed. As regards the bacon industry the question of capacity is being dealt with in the context of rationalisation.
There is no information available to me as to the total capital employed in the industry.

I seek clarification on the contents of the table. Is there a clear distinction between the concerns involved in the production of pigmeat and other concerns? In that table will it be possible for us to see the dates on which licences were granted to bacon factories?

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that because there is no seasonal adjustment in the floor price of beef in the EEC there is likely to be a glut of beef on the market in the autumn? There will be a heavy strain on the killing capacity over a short period of the year. Has the Parliamentary Secretary considered the implications of this for extension of capacity in the meat industry?
