Vol. 259 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Referendum.

39.

asked the Minister for Local Government the date of the EEC referendum.

A decision has not yet been taken as to the date of the referendum.

Would it be the 10th of May?

Is the Minister aware that most Members of the House assume that it will be the 10th of May?

The Minister is not responsible for the assumptions of any Member of the House. I am making a factual statement that no decision has been made on the matter.

Will the Minister state how it was that he was able to base his decision to defer the local elections on the alleged decision with regard to the date of the referendum and yet he is not in a position to give us a decision in regard to the date of the referendum?

That was a reasonable assumption on my part. No date has been decided.

Will the Minister tell us where he will make the announcement? Will it be made in this House or outside the House?

I have not decided yet.

The Minister will bypass the House, as usual. He is looking for our co-operation to win the referendum. If you do not get that co-operation you certainly will not win it.

The only thing to do is not to give your co-operation and that is the end of it.
