Vol. 259 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Pickers' Conditions.

3.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has satisfied himself that the conditions of employment laid down by the Scottish authorities in relation to potato pickers are being observed by Irish employers.

I indicated on the 28th October last that the position of the potato workers was improving. As a further step towards ensuring the continued improvement of their position a handbook setting out the rights and conditions of employment of the workers was yesterday jointly published by my Department and the Department of Labour. In addition, as the Deputy may have seen from the press statement announcing publication, the Embassy in London is keeping in close touch with the Scottish authorities and others concerned in Scotland to ensure observance of the potato workers' rights and conditions.
