Vol. 260 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stocking of School Libraries.

47.

(Cavan) asked the Minister for Education if grants are available for the building and stocking of libraries in post primary schools; and, if not, if he will take steps to have such libraries made available.

There is not at present a special grants scheme for the stocking of libraries in secondary schools but the introduction of such a scheme is under consideration.

Vocational education committees are empowered to allocate funds for the provision of libraries in vocational schools.

Funds are provided as necessary for the stocking of libraries in comprehensive schools.

(Cavan): Did I understand the Minister to say that there is no grant available for stocking? Is there a grant available for the construction or reconstruction of a building for a suitable library?

I could not answer that offhand.

(Cavan): It is part of the question—if grants are available for the building and stocking of libraries. It is clearly set out in the question.

I am afraid the answer concentrated on stocking.

(Cavan): Perhaps the Minister would be good enough to communicate with me by letter.

That is in relation to secondary schools?

(Cavan): Exactly.
