asked the Minister for Finance why tax free allowances under PAYE have not been adjusted to take into account the increase in social welfare stamps; and, if he will state the amount in each category which is allowed for social welfare stamps under PAYE.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Free Allowances.
Tax-free allowances are being adjusted to take into account the increased deductions due in respect of the allowable portions of social welfare contributions. Amended certificates of tax-free allowances will be issued in the coming weeks to give effect to the increased income tax allowances introduced in the recent Budget and these certificates will include the revised amounts in respect of the social welfare contributions.
Particulars of the amount of the contribution allowable for income tax purposes for 1972-73 in each category are set out in a tabular statement, which I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have circulated with the Official Report.

Is the Minister aware that the tax free allowances certificates for 1972-73 have not taken into account the changes which took place last year in social welfare payments?
That appears to be the position.
To avoid a lot of extra work, surely an effort should be made to try to bring them up to date.
They will be included in the new certificates which are making allowance for the changed income tax allowances in the budget.
Will they be going out soon?
Within the next few weeks.
Last year they did not go out until August and everyone was £5 or £6 in arrears which was deducted in one week from their wages.
