Vol. 260 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Wildfowl Sanctuary.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made to date in establishing a wildfowl sanctuary at Derrynane National Park, County Kerry; and if plans have yet been formulated for a water garden.

Part of the Derrynane National Park near the sea shore has been chosen as a wildfowl sanctuary. In order to make the selected site attractive to wildlife it will be necessary to increase the area of open water available and it is expected that work on the project will commence shortly.

The area suggested for development as a water garden adjoins the proposed wildfowl sanctuary. Further consideration of this proposal has been deferred pending completion of the wildfowl sanctuary.

Would a lack of money be the cause of deferring it?

After the provision of the wildfowl sanctuary, the water level is expected to rise and before proceeding we shall wait and see what happens regarding the water levels.
