Vol. 260 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug Abuse.

67.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of cases involving illegal possession of (a) heroin, (b) LSD, (c) cannabis or marijuana and (d) other drugs in which proceedings have been taken but court decisions have not yet been given.

The figures are three, seven, 47 and six, respectively. I should add that the number of persons involved in the 63 cases is 47.

68.

asked the Minister for Justice if he considers that an increase in the Garda drug squad would help to combat the increasing incidence of the illegal use of drugs in the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The assignment of additional members of the Garda either to the drug squad or to any other particular duties is a matter for the Commissioner who has available to him the advice of his senior officers.

The Commissioner informs me that he does not propose at the moment to increase the strength of the drug squad in Dublin but the matter is kept under regular review.
