Vol. 261 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sanctions on Rhodesia.

10.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs what action will be taken by the Government, in view of the rejection of the settlement proposals by the people of Rhodesia, to initiate or support strengthened sanctions and other steps against the Rhodesian administration with a view to hastening the pace towards genuine majority rule.

The imposition or variation of mandatory sanctions is a matter for the Security Council, of which Ireland is not a member. The council decided on 28th February, 1972, that the present sanctions against Southern Rhodesia should remain fully in force.

Can the Minister say why no statement whatever has been issued by the Irish Government regarding the commission's recent report, bearing in mind that most western European countries have made their views known internationally and have made them known in no uncertain manner at the UN?

We have made our position clear in this regard. There is no doubt as to the Irish position. At all stages we have voted fully for any UN sanctions with regard to Rhodesia. That position still stands. The Security Council is the implementing force of the UN decisions. That is the situation.
