Vol. 261 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices Survey.

79.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of a survey carried out by the Irish Housewives Association into the price differential operating in supermarkets and chain stores and that this survey revealed areas of large price difference for the same item purchased in various stores; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the findings of the survey referred to by the Deputy. I welcome the publication of comparative information on retail prices which provides consumers with a better knowledge of where best value for money is to be found. The availability of such information should serve to improve the quality of competition in retailing to the advantage of consumers.

As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware, the National Prices Commission are very actively concerned in this matter of protecting the consumers' interest and in fact sponsored the survey to which he refers. The Commission have not, however, recommended the imposition of detailed control on retail prices generally.
