Vol. 261 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers - CIE Modernisation Scheme.

41.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will make a statement outlining the improvements and modernisation planned by CIE for inter-city and commuter services; how much the Government will be asked to allocate to this scheme; and if any of the cost of these improvements will have to be borne by the public by way of increased fares.

The improvements and modernisation under examination by CIE for inter-city and commuter services follow the general recommendations outlined in the McKinsey Report "Defining the Role of Public Transport in a Changing Environment" and in the Foras Forbartha Advisory Report "Transportation in Dublin". These relate principally to the development of Dublin commuter services to enable them to play the maximum role possible in helping to overcome urban congestion. The allocation of costs for improvements emerging from this examination would depend on decisions to be taken by the Government on both reports.
