Vol. 261 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Flooding.

139.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the serious flooding caused by the Clonfanlough river, County Offaly; if he will provide money for its general improvement and drainage in view of the fact that the landowners and others in the area are at serious financial loss as a result of the general state of neglect of the river; and if he will expedite the matter.

There is no information in my Department about the flooding referred to by the Deputy.

There are various State-assisted schemes applicable to drainage It would be a matter for the local authority to consider in the first instance whether action on their part would be appropriate but there are no funds at my disposal out of which grants could be made available towards the cost of drainage in rural areas except in so far as the works may be carried out under the local improvement schemes.
