Vol. 261 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Comprehensive School.

55.

asked the Minister for Education if a comprehensive school will be established in the Lismore/Lisduggan area of Waterford city; if so, whether teachers and parents will have representation on the board of management; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of establishing a community school in the Lismore/Lisduggan area of Waterford city is being considered by my Department. Discussions will take place shortly with all the interests involved. The management structure proposed for community schools envisages that there will be parent representation on the boards of management of these schools. I have on numerous occasions in this House dealt with the position of teachers in relation to the management of these schools.

Would the Minister not agree that there should be some type of teacher representation on the board of management? On a number of occasions my predecessor and I have suggested publicly that there should be teacher representation.

I have already pointed out that I believe the system I am proposing is a better one.
