Vol. 261 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Office Accommodation.

32.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the names of offices at present occupied by civil servants or other Government agencies which are rented, (b) the addresses of these offices, (c) from whom they are rented and (d) the annual rent paid in each case.

The reply is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

I regret I have no information at my disposal in relation to offices rented by other Government agencies.

It is not the practice to disclose the amount of commercial rents payable in respect of individual properties and it would not be in the public interest to do so. The total amount of commercial rents payable in respect of offices occupied by Government staffs is approximately £850,000 per annum at present.

May I ask the Parliamentary Secretary what he means by "it would not be in the public interest"? The public would like to know what it means.

It means quite simply that if we reveal what we are renting certain space for we may put ourselves at a disadvantage by giving that information to the competitors of the people with whom we are dealing.

What about the public?

Is there an office block in Phibsboro included in that?

I can answer that question quite simply. The tabular statement has 16 pages of foolscap and if the Deputy would like to read it——

Let me put the question this way: for how long has an office block been rented in Phibsboro and not yet occupied by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs? As far as I know it is rented for 12 months but not occupied.

I am not aware of its not being occupied.

It is not occupied although it is rented.

That is a matter for the Department of Posts and Telegraphs who requested this space.

It is easy when it is not their own money they are throwing around.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance the total floor space rented as offices for use by Government Departments in Dublin for the years ended 31st March, 1971, and 31st March, 1972, respectively.

The total of rented floor space in use as offices by Government Departments in Dublin for the years ended 31st March, 1971, and 31st March, 1972, amounted to 640,000 square feet and 769,000 square feet respectively.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell me what percentage that is of the total office block area in Dublin?

I could not give the Deputy that information.

Could I ask the Parliamentary Secretary what is the reason for this abnormal increase in one year, from 640,000 square feet to 769,000 square feet?

There are more services. The main buildings rented during the year were Marlboro Street offices, Pearse House, O'Connell Bridge House extension, Cumberland House and No. 39 Dawson Street.

That is not an answer to my question. I asked what was the reason for it.

It is a separate question.

It is not a separate question.

It is a statistical question. It is very much a separate question.

It is not. It is the very same question and arises directly out of the question. The Ceann Comhairle can say what he likes.
