Vol. 261 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Donegal School.

18.

asked the Minister for Education whether he made an order for the reopening of Ranafast national school, County Donegal; and, if so, the date on which the order was made.

No order was made by the Minister for Education for the reopening of Ranafast national school. He agreed to the reopening of the school as from the 10th April, 1972, having received representations from the parents and following an investigation of the circumstances, from which it emerged that there were sufficient pupils in the Ranafast and Meenalick districts to sustain a three-teacher school at Ranafast.

In other words, the decision to close the school was a wrong decision?

Why did you reopen it?

As the Deputy will probably be aware, the parents of children in both schools, in fact, subsequently gave certain indications as to what they intended to do with their children, where they would send them. It was as a consequence of that decision and that consultation that the new decision was taken.

With respect, if the Minister took a decision to close Ranafast national school and then reopen it again the Parliamentary Secretary must concede that his original decision was a wrong one?

Not necessarily. In certain circumstances such decisions are made.

With the emphasis on "circumstances".

If the question was different the answer might be different.
