Vol. 262 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Post-Primary Education.

47.

asked the Minister for Education if discussions have taken place as promised with the people concerned for the provision of post-primary education in the Lucan/ Palmerstown area, County Dublin; and, if so, the outcome of these discussions.

My Department has had discussions with the authorities of the existing secondary schools in Lucan regarding the provision of a community school in the area and these authorities are at present considering the proposal.

A meeting has also been arranged with the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee to discuss this and other matters.

When the Minister says a meeting has been arranged with the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee, has any communication been addressed to the committee?

I understand from the note I have here that a meeting with the chairman of the County Dublin Vocational Committee has been arranged for Monday, 3rd July.

In relation to this matter?

It is not my information that it is in relation to that matter at all.

The reply states that it is to discuss this and other matters

In view of the concern locally, would the Minister, or somebody from his Department, be prepared to meet the approved local community council in relation to this matter?

We are already discussing the matter with the secondary school authorities and I said we are prepared to discuss the matter with the County Dublin Vocational Education Committee.

The Minister appreciates that the parents are concerned in this as well?

Of course.

Would somebody meet the parents to allay their concern and anxiety?

I can appreciate the situation, but, as the Deputy is aware, we are at the moment in the process of meeting the various school authorities.

Does the Minister not consider the parents in all this? Does he not appreciate that here you have a council representing the whole community and they are anxious to meet the Minister or somebody from his Department to discuss the implication for them in the area?

I am sure I could arrange to have some officials meet them.
