Vol. 262 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Border Postings.

28.

asked the Minister for Justice if any extra Garda superintendents or chief superintendents have been posted to border areas consequent on the increased number of men posted there.

Three additional superintendents have been assigned to Border divisions, in accordance with the Government decision announced on 18th April, 1972.

No extra chief superintendents have been permanently appointed to these divisions.

Is the Minister aware that there is a feeling amongst the extra gardaí drafted to the border to perform difficult duties there that there is not sufficient officer force to whom they can turn for direction in the many difficult situations that arise and would he not agree with me that three extra superintendents are not sufficient to cover an area from the very north of Donegal right along the entire border to County Louth? The existing officers have their ordinary day-to-day duties in their divisions and there would need to be an increase on the number of three.

The three superintendents seem to be able to cope quite successfully and, as the Deputy may be aware, it is hoped shortly to increase the number of inspectors generally and, of course, a proportion of these will be sent to border areas if they are still needed there.
