Vol. 262 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Officers.

53.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of agricultural officers, grades I to VIII inclusive, who are at present operating under the direct control of his Department.

54.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that agricultural officers operating as inspectors in meat processing factories often receive lower weekly rates of pay than many of the skilled and unskilled workers; and if he will state the reasons.

55.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries why some agricultural officers become established after two years service while others may not be established after 20 years service.

56.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that a grade I agricultural officer has 25 days annual holidays while a grade VIII officer receives only 15; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

57.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that in the case of a grade I and grade VIII agricultural officer being away from their headquarters and staying in the same hotel, the former receives £4 per day and the latter £2 per day subsistence allowances; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

58.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the minimum and maximum annual rates of salary applicable to an established grade VI agricultural officer and to an unestablished officer doing similar work in similar areas.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 53 to 58 together.

The number of agricultural officer posts, grades I to VIII inclusive, in my Department is 1,344, of which 985 are established. A tabular statement of the salary scales will be circulated in the Official Report. The same salary scale applies to established and unestablished officers. Unestablished officers are appointed to vacancies arising in established posts, on the basis of qualification by the Civil Service Commissioners.

Annual leave allowances and subsistence rates are related to salary scales in accordance with general Civil Service practice.

The salaries of agricultural officers serving in meat processing factories are those of the appropriate official grades and comparison with the remuneration of factory staffs does not arise.

59.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the minimum and maximum annual salary rates applicable to each grade of agricultural officer, grades I to VIII, under the control of his Department.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
