Vol. 263 No. 8

Written Answers. - Kerry Land Transaction.

349.

asked the Minister for Justice when a dealing in County Kerry (details supplied) was lodged in the Land Registry; when it was or will be issued; and if he will account for any delay.

The dealing in question was lodged in the Land Registry on 23rd September, 1971. It was completed, and notification of completion was issued to the solicitor concerned in the case, on 20th July, 1972.

The delay in the completion of the dealing was caused by the serious arrears position which has obtained in the Land Registry in recent years. Various measures have already been taken to strengthen the staffing and organisation of the registry and these have proved very beneficial. Unfortunately, however, their effect has been offset by a very substantial increase in the volume of dealings lodged, which has grown from 38,000 in 1970 to 46,000 in 1971 and an estimated 52,000 in 1972. Further measures are in train to cope with the increased volume of work and it is hoped that, as a result, excessive delays in registrations will be eliminated and that in general a more efficient service will be provided for the public.
