Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Dublin City School.

10.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the need for a secondary school for girls in St. Agatha's parish, North William Street, Dublin; and whether there are any proposals to this effect with his Department at present.

The position is as stated in reply to a similar question on the 25th April, 1972.

Can the Minister say if there are proposals before his Department?

An application was received for such a school and it is under consideration. I mentioned on previous occasions that the effect of this proposal on existing schools would have to be taken into account.

Could the Minister say how long the application has been in his Department and when he is likely to make a decision?

The proposal has been in the Department for quite some time. Apart from other considerations, I can say that the accommodation offered is not suitable. There are, however, other factors involved.

Could the Minister give any indication of when a decision is likely to be announced?

I am afraid I cannot. I wish to add that nobody in the area is deprived of post-primary education because there is no school in North William Street.

Will the Minister not agree that the reason for this is that children are travelling long distances to other areas?

I do not agree.

It is a pity the Minister for Finance has left the House.

Will the decision be available before the transfer of the Department to Athlone?

That is a separate question.
