Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Garda Stations.

117.

asked the Minister for Justice whether it is proposed to erect a new Garda barracks in Corofin, County Clare; and if an adequate number of gardaí will be stationed there to give protection to the people and to carry out ordinary police work.

The Office of Public Works have been asked to erect a new Garda station at Corofin.

The Commissioner considers that the present strength of the station party is adequate for the needs of the area.

118.

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the condition of many buildings used by the Garda as stations; whether a full investigation into all unsuitable stations has been carried out; and the action he proposes taking to provide first-class office and duty conditions for the Garda.

I am of course aware that many Garda stations are in need of replacement or improvement and, as indicated in the House earlier this year, I approved the use of system-built station units with a view to expediting work on the Garda building programme. A separate unit has since been set up in my Department to deal with the extensive building programme which is needed to provide better accommodation for the Garda Síochána and for the other sevices for which I am responsible.
