Vol. 263 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Garda Pay and Conditions.

121.

andMr. M. O'Leary asked the Minister for Justice the total number of members of the Garda Síochána brought within the scope of section 15 of the Social Welfare Act, 1972; the total excluded to date; and when the recommendation of the report of the Commission on Garda Pay and Conditions will be fully implemented.

The total number of members brought within the scope of the Social Welfare Acts as a result of section 15 of the Social Welfare Act, 1972, is 1,417.

The number of members who are outside the scope of these Acts is 5,812. The position of the latter members in relation to these Acts is at present being examined by the Minister for Social Welfare.

Is there any hope of a decision in this regard being expedited in view of the fact that only one out of every five gardaí is covered by section 15 of the Social Welfare Act, 1972? There was a commitment as a result of the Conroy Commission's findings that all members of the Garda Síochána would be included?

The matter has been put before the Minister for Social Welfare who is the person responsible for making a decision concerning it. I have recommended that it be agreed.

122.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange to have Garda personnel paid on a weekly basis.

Under existing arrangements, approximately 40 per cent of the force is paid weekly. The design of a computerised system for the issue of weekly pay is under way and the system is expected to be in operation before the end of next year.
