asked the Minister for Health the number of physiotherapists in each of the health board areas and the proportion of these employed in a temporary capacity.

The numbers of physiotherapist posts approved in each health board area are set out in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The statement shows the present approved complements of physiotherapists employed by health boards and indicates the numbers of permanent posts and temporary part-time appointments. The policy is, of course, to provide a service by way of permanent staff, but occasions arise when, due to illness or the occurrence of unforeseen vacancies in permanent posts, it becomes necessary to employ temporary replacements on a part-time sessional basis.

As health boards may fill vacancies in approved physiotherapist posts without reference to me, I am unable to give figures showing the actual appointment position at any given time.
