asked the Minister for Justice the total number of convicted persons released from prison over the past three years; and the number of these who were recommitted following further convictions.

The numbers of sentenced persons who were released from prison having served their sentences in each of the last three years were as follows: 1969, 1,699; 1970, 1,898; 1971, 2,402; total 5,999.

The only statistics relating to recidivism that are available are those contained in the "Annual Reports on Prisons", copies of which are available in the Library.
