asked the Taoiseach if he will tabulate the average number of persons in receipt of (a) unemployment benefit and (b) unemployment assistance for the first ten months of 1970, 1971 and 1972 in respect of the following employment exchange areas: Dublin city, Dún Laoghaire, Bray, Waterford city, Cork city, Limerick city and Galway city.

The average numbers of unemployment benefit claims and unemployment assistance applications current at the end of the month for the first ten months of 1970, 1971 and 1972 at the specified local employment offices are as follows:—

(a) The introduction from 1st October, 1970 of the payment of retirement pensions at Post Offices to insured persons who have reached the age of 65, who have retired from employment and who satisfy certain contribution conditions could affect the comparability of the figures to some extent.

(b) Comparison of the 1971 figures for Unemployment Assistance applicants with those for the other years is affected by the operation of the Employment Period Order in 1971. The figure for Galway is the one mostly affected but the figures for the other offices may also be very slightly affected.
