Vol. 264 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick College Future.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been drawn to a statement by the President of Mungret College, Limerick that the college will close in 1974; and the plans he has to retain this institution for educational purposes.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to a previous question by him on 13th April, 1972. I have nothing to add to this reply.

Would the Minister state specifically what he has in mind in regard to the future of Mungret College? It is situated in an area that is expanding more and more every day and the loss of this school to the area would be a tragedy. What is he doing now to avert that tragedy in 1974?

The school in question is mainly a boarding establishment. The majority of the pupils are from outside Limerick city and the closure would not have any significant effect on the educational demands in that region.

I want to direct the Minister's attention to the fact that while it is principally a boarding school it has some day classes and day boys attend it and with the expansion that is going on and the lack of educational facilities generally within the Limerick region he should take immediate steps to see that this is not lost to that area.

The number of day pupils at the school is 19. I am rather amazed that Deputy Coughlan should refer to the lack of educational facilities in Limerick of all places.

Question No. 46.

Even though we are making tremendous effort in regard to education in Limerick, no thanks to the Department of Education. This is a need and I want to——

The Deputy has already said that. Question No. 46.

I will raise this again. I am not satisfied with the Minister's reply.

Is the Deputy giving notice that he wishes to raise this on the adjournment?

A Cheann Comhairle, with all due respect to you, I will raise it in my own time.

Will the Deputy raise it in the Dáil?
