With your permission a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 38 to 43 together.
A survey was carried out by my Department. Subsequently 36 of the 38 parents concerned signified in writing that they wished to have Rannafast school re-opened as a three-teacher school. I have no knowledge of any other survey. The enrolment at the Rannafast school is 67 and the number of pupils required for the retention of three teachers in such a school is 65. On this basis no question of reviewing the position in other Gaeltacht schools which have been closed arises. Two of the children attending Rannafast school are on Gael Linn scholarships. These children would have been tested as to their proficiency in Irish before having been awarded the scholarships and the appellation monoglot English speakers would not apply to them.
