Vol. 264 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Library.

54.

asked the Minister for Education the number of books belonging to the National Library which are at present being stored elsewhere; and the steps being taken to provide adequate space for placing all the books within the National Library.

A considerable volume of low demand printed material and uncatalogued manuscript material is stored off-premises by the National Library. It is not possible to give the number of items concerned.

With regard to the question of providing space for all the library's books within the National Library, I assure the Deputy that all possible solutions to the library's serious accommodation problem are at present being pursued as a matter of urgency.

Would the Minister not make representations to the National Library to ensure that all manuscripts are properly catalogued?

I think they are dealing with this as quickly as they can but the problem of accommodation is one of the most serious aspects of this matter.
