Vol. 264 No. 3

Written Answers. - Canal Safeguards.

107.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is satisfied that adequate safeguards exist at canal locks on the Grand Canal; and if in view of another recent fatality his Department will undertake a review of these safeguards as a matter of urgency.

So far as local authority action is concerned it is a matter for Dublin Corporation to consider what action may be appropriate under the provisions of the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1964 relating to dangerous places. I understand that the corporation have, in fact, carried out certain protective works on those portions of the banks of the Grand Canal within their area which in their opinion were dangerous and that the position in this respect is kept constantly under review by them.
