Vol. 265 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows' Benefits.

57.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that working widows in receipt of widows' pensions are paid social welfare benefit at only half-rate when ill; and when he will arrange for amendment of the Social Welfare Acts to rectify this injustice.

Representations on the matter of the Deputy's question were made by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to the former Minister for Social Welfare. I am having these representations examined. I recognise the anomalies in the case referred to and hope to complete my examination within a reasonable time.

I should like to thank the Parliamentary Secretary for his reply. At last we are getting something done about the matter. It was ignored and we were ridiculed when we raised this question before.

The Deputy must ask a question.
