Vol. 265 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay Rates of Men and Women.

2.

asked the Minister for Labour the measures taken to date by his Department to ensure the full implementation of the Interim Report on Equal Pay from the Commission on the Status of Women, published in August, 1971; and the measures taken to date by the Government to implement Article 119 of the Rome Treaty which relates to equal pay.

3.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will ban advertisements which specify either men or women for job vacancies.

With your permission a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 2 and 3 together.

The Employer/Labour Conference National Agreement of July, 1972, contains provisions whereby trade unions may, in certain circumstances, submit claims for narrowing or eliminating the difference in the rates of pay of men and women. For the purpose of dealing with disputes arising from these claims an equal pay commissioner was appointed to the Labour Court in November, 1972.

A Bill on equal pay is in preparation.

In its consideration of the final report of the Commission on the Status of Women the Government will review the whole matter in the light of the undertaking given before the general election to introduce legislation to end all forms of existing discrimination against women.
