Vol. 265 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Cruises.

62.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why CIE have discontinued cruises from Athlone; and if he will take steps to ensure that this major tourist attraction is maintained.

CIE's initial involvement in cruises on the Shannon, which the board have been operating since 1955, was to engender an interest in the Shannon waterway as a sailing and cruising attraction, particularly for tourists. Since then a large number of organisations have become involved in this type of activity and the board consider, therefore, that their aim has been achieved and there there is now no reason for them to continue to provide this service, which, for the board, is essentially a loss-making one.

Negotiations are at present in progress between CIE and local development interests in Athlone and Killaloe who are interested in taking over the operation of the services. The board are hopeful that the negotiations will be completed shortly.

I did not catch the entire answer, but what I am concerned about is that, in discussions I had with the boatowners about Shannon navigation, the season last year went right up, I understand, to the late autumn and continental visitors, who are on the increase, want very much to have this service. It seems peculiar that the Minister in charge of tourism and also in charge of the State-sponsored company concerned should allow any decrease in activities on the River Shannon.

There will be no decrease. The Deputy was not listening to my reply. I said CIE are negotiating for local interests to take over the boats in question.

Will they arrange then for other transport, such as buses or trains, to serve wherever these boats are?

That is a separate question.

I understand they have these special buses down to Athlone.

If the Deputy puts down a question next week I shall give him information.
