Vol. 265 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - EEC Draft Directives.

26.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he proposes to take any action on the EEC draft directive on beers; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume that the EEC draft directive to which the Deputy is referring is the directive on the harmonisation of member states' legislation pertaining to beer. My Department has been having consultations with the Irish brewing industry over the past two years and both parties are fully aware of the implications which the directive, if adopted in its present form, would have for the industry. The Irish point of view will, of course, be put forward at the appropriate time.

27.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the Government intends to comply with the proposed EEC directive on cosmetics.

The directive on cosmetics proposed by the Council of the European Communities has not yet been adopted. It is still under discussion by the representatives of the member states.

Governments of member states must implement the terms of directives when these have been approved and notified by the Council.
