Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Primary Schools.

11.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that in the greater Dublin area 75 per cent of primary school pupils are in classes of over 40 and half of the pupils are in classes with 45 or more pupils and also that many school buildings and play areas are inadequate; and if he will state the action his Department intends to take to alleviate this position.

Mr. R. Burke

Due to the influx of families with school-going children into new housing areas, some schools in the greater Dublin area become temporarily overcrowded. In such cases every effort is being made to provide the necessary additional accommodation without any undue delay.

Adequate play areas are made available at all new schools, but due to the restricted sites of some old schools, play areas, unfortunately, fall short of the demands of modern standards.

12.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the present unsatisfactory position regarding the provision of local financial contributions in respect of the proposed new St. Brigid's National School, Glasnevin, Dublin; and if he will agree to a substantial reduction in the amount sought.

Mr. R. Burke

I am glad to be able to inform the Deputy that satisfactory arrangements have recently been made with the school authorities in regard to the amount of the local contribution to be paid in respect of the proposed new school.
