Vol. 265 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Dog Unit.

48.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will increase the Garda dog unit in Dublin to more than five.

I am informed by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, that the number of dogs now available is adequate for requirements.

Is the figure "five" correct?

The figure "five" is correct but in addition the Drug Squad also have a dog which makes the figure "six".

This number must cater for 800,000 or 900,000 people?

I am informed by the Commissioner, on whose professional judgment I have to rely, that the number of dogs which we have available are adequate for his needs.

At the time I established this particular service, when I was Minister for Justice, the initial number was five.

I am not so aware.

I hope they are not the same dogs.
