Vol. 265 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Automobile Taxes.

42.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has any proposals to reduce automobile taxes to EEC levels.

There is at present no uniform system of road tax on vehicles in operation in the EEC. Considerable variations exist between the member states both as to the methods by which such taxes are levied and as to their levels. One of the aims of the Community's common transport policy is the institution of a common system of pricing for the use of road infrastructure so as to secure by making the user pay full costs imputed to him that existing road infrastructure capacity is used with the maximum efficiency. The suggested system requires consideration of many complex and highly technical matters in relation to the apportionment of road user costs and, at this stage, there is no indication what the outcome of such consideration will be.
