Vol. 265 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Marriage Bar.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he expects to be in a position to remove the marriage bar in the case of women employed by local authorities.

I am at present examining the implications of the removal of the marriage bar in the case of women employed in the local authority service with a view to aligning developments generally with developments in other sectors of the public service.

45.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate a date for the abolition of the marriage bar on women working in the Civil Service; and if he will outline the position of former employees who wish to return to work in the Civil Service.

The date of removal of the marriage bar in the Civil Service will be determined by the enactment of the legislation required to remove the bar. This legislation will be introduced in the near future.

As regards the re-employment question, this and other practical issues associated with removal of the marriage bar are being considered in consultation with staff interests.
