Vol. 265 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Montessori Graduates Recognition.

9.

asked the Minister for Education the approximate cost to his Department of implementing recognition of Montessori graduates as national and primary school teachers.

Mr. R. Burke

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of 9th May, 1973, regarding the question of the recognition in national schools of Montessori trained teachers. In the context of that reply no question of assessing the cost of employing such teachers as against teachers trained in the normal way arises at present.

Is it not a fact that the cost is one of the inhibiting factors at the moment in relation to recognising these teachers?

Mr. R. Burke

Does the Deputy mean the cost of paying teachers' salaries?

Mr. R. Burke

I would not so regard it. Perhaps other costs might be involved and not teachers' salaries as such.

I am glad to hear that.
