asked the Minister for Defence the total number of persons serving prison sentences in military custody.

23.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of persons currently detained in military custody (a) on remand (b) following conviction by the Special Criminal Court and (c) following conviction under the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act, 1972.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 22 and 23 together.

The number of civilian prisoners held in military custody is 38. There are no remand prisoners held and the number held following conviction by the Special Criminal Court is 36.

None of the prisoners was convicted of an offence under the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act, 1972.
