24.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (1) the number of drift net licences issued each year from 1967 to date and (2) the number of catches taken annually by drift net fishermen for that period and the amount of each catch.

26.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries (a) the number of salmon and white trout licences which were issued from 1967 to date and the number of catches recorded during that period and (b) the amount of revenue derived from salmon and white trout licences issued between 1967 and the present.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 26 together.

I refer the Deputy to the Annual Reports on the Sea and Inland Fisheries for the years 1967 to 1971, inclusive, which have been published and which contain full particulars of numbers and rates of duty per licence in respect of salmon fishing licences issued and of catches of salmon and sea trout. I will let the Deputy have a copy of the annual report for each of those years.

The report for 1972 has not yet been published, but the relevant figures for that year are:—

Salmon:

3,690,111 lb. of which 2,347,055 lb is in respect of drift nets.

12,134 of which 1,156 were drift net licences

Sea Trout:71,684 lb. of which 4,900 lb is in respect of drift nets.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the number of drift net licences issued from December, 1972, to date.

The number of drift net licences issued from December, 1972, to date is 770.
