Vol. 265 No. 12

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ophthalmic Treatment.

20.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the delays arising from the unsatisfactory position in regard to the provision of optical treatment and the supply of spectacles to medical card holders in the Southern Health Board area; and if he will take steps to ensure that the service is greatly improved.

The adequacy of the present system of providing ophthalmic services, including spectacles, for medical card holders is at present being examined by my Department. On completion of this examination, I expect to be in a position to determine soon whether there is a need for changes in the present system as operated by health boards, including the Southern Health Board. Meanwhile, I understand the Southern Health Board is taking steps to reduce delays in the provision of ophthalmic services, under present arrangements, in its area.
