Vol. 265 No. 12

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dependant's Allowance.

21.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider introducing a dependant's allowance in the case of non-contributory old age and blind pensions.

Provision already exists under existing legislation for increasing old age and blind pensions in respect of dependent children. There is no such provision for adult dependants but in the case of a married couple, both of whom are of pensionable age or blind, each may claim a pension in his or her own right.

Substantial improvements are being made in the old age and blind pensions as announced in the budget statement and it is not at present proposed to make any further change in regard to coverage of dependants.
