Vol. 266 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Classification of Post Offices.

127.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will indicate the grades of State post offices in Connacht, Westmeath and Longford; if he has any proposals to upgrade or downgrade any of these; and the future status of telephone exchanges in these areas, that is, whether automatic, auto-manual or manual.

I assume the Deputy has in mind the classification of offices for pay purposes. Of the departmentally staffed post offices in the areas mentioned, Galway is classed as class I and the remainder as class II for staff pay generally. For postmasters' pay the offices are classified as follows:

Class II

1

Class III

3

Class IV

4

Class V

5

Class VI

7

I have no specific proposals at present to alter the classification of any of these offices, either as regards staff pay generally or postmasters' pay. The matter is subject to review from time to time.

There are 91 automatic exchanges in the area, including four automanual exchanges. It is planned to convert all the remaining exchanges to automatic working and to provide one additional automanual exchange.
