Vol. 266 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Polychlorinated Biphenyls.

31.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the proposals the Government have to control the manufacture and use of polychlorinated biphenyls.

In so far as danger might arise to workers engaged in handling this material the matter is covered by the Factories Act, 1955, which is administered by the Department of Labour. Any pollution of food with this product would be covered by the Food and Drugs Acts which are administered by the Minister for Health. The Ministers for Local Government and for Agriculture and Fisheries have powers in relation to protection of the environment. Polychlorinated biphenyls do not appear to offer any threat which cannot be dealt with under these provisions, and there is no need for taking additional measures.
